My Day-to-Day Life as a Digital Copywriter

Dealing with Potential Digital Copywriting Clients

My daily experiences as a digital copywriter can be like a roller coaster. I really have no idea exactly what to expect on a day-to-day basis. It can be exciting but also stressful. I feel I have a good grasp of managing my business and preventing things from spiraling out of control. However, there is always an element of surprise and a need to keep fine-tuning my abilities to deal with unexpected challenges.

My day-to-day responsibilities encompass communication with potential clients in a variety of forms. This includes emails, messages through social media, and phone/video calls. This alone can account for a great percentage of the digital copywriting lifestyle. This is an industry that entails sales and interpersonal skills.

The actual digital copywriting is one component but you need to get past any inhibitions and be willing to communicate with potential clients. Without a client base, there is no business. It is also important not to get too comfortable. I am always open to new business because I factor in the possibility that a current copywriting client may cut back on their marketing budget, their desire to engage in content marketing, etc.

Handling Digital Copywriting Negotiation and Roadblocks

In order to be successful in building a digital copywriting business, you have to develop a thick skin. I view it as a numbers game to a certain extent. There is little time to allow nerves or shyness to get in your way. The sooner you talk to the next potential client, the sooner you have additional digital copywriting work coming your way.

I try not to ruminate on disappointments or potentials I feel have wasted my time. If the time and effort I have put into communicating with them do not result in a partnership, I move on as quickly as possible. There is way too much opportunity out there to let one disappointment stand in your way or shake your confidence. Just brush it off and get started scheduling the next phone or video call, etc.

In dealing with adding to my digital copywriting client base, I am often placed in unanticipated and awkward situations. It is not always possible to know for sure who you will be asked to get on a phone or video call with. It may be someone within a company you have not had prior communication with, or you may need to speak with several people before a partnership is agreed upon.

I find it most convenient to speak to a decision-maker from the onset (Founder, CEO, other C-level members of the organization) because it leads to a faster decision-making process. Be ready to sell yourself, your digital copywriting experience and capabilities, answer unexpected questions, and relay how you can help their business. Also be prepared to negotiate rates and express why the rates you are proposing are justified, based on your expertise and background.

Managing My Current Digital Copywriting Workload

Dealing with potential digital copywriting clients involves a 50/50 effort for me. It is a relief to have potential clients reaching out to me, it lessens my effort, but I also enjoy proactively going after opportunities of interest. However, when I am swamped with current copywriting, editing projects, etc., I am pressed for time in that regard.

In those circumstances, I am focused on meeting deadlines, communicating with current clients, gaining feedback, clarification of guidelines, invoicing, following up on payments, developing contracts, and the many other tasks associated with the actual digital copywriting work.

There are also the offshoots of copywriting, such as content creation for my own site, and marketing to maintain an online presence and generate business e.g. SEO, social media marketing. In addition to keeping my financial business matters in order (bookkeeping/accounting, taxes, etc.). I also think it is important to build a portfolio of investments with a portion of my digital copywriting earnings, considering I am a self-employed person and responsible for my own retirement account.

The day-to-day life of a digital copywriter is a multifaceted experience. I enjoy the excitement and unpredictability to a certain reasonable extent. It adds to a feeling of freedom and accomplishment, as I become stronger and more capable of handling unforeseen challenges. Each day is different from the one before, and I appreciate the opportunity to meet new and interesting clients.
